St. Mary Medical Center’s EMS Training Academy is a Pre-hospital Emergency Medical Services Training Center, responsible for initial training and subsequent skills development of area EMS providers. As a nationally accredited teaching hospital, we offer an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course to the public for initial education and training. We also offer an advanced Paramedic course for the EMT looking to extend their education and training.

In addition to providing the highest quality pre-hospital education available, St. Mary Medical Center EMS Training Academy places emphasis on personal and professional growth and development, integrity and professionalism. Our goal is to prepare compassionate, clinically competent and technically proficient graduates through our programs.

Below are the standing medical directions used in the pre-hospital setting for individual certifications:

Our certified EMS and Paramedic courses provide the full spectrum of emergency service training for individuals pursuing a career path in emergency services. These entry-level and advanced training courses prepare students for jobs in a variety of settings including ambulance services, or clinic settings such as hospitals. Many graduates take the knowledge gained through these courses as a first step toward pursuing an exciting career in emergency medicine or healthcare.

The St. Mary Medical Center EMS Training Academy will be the single leader in pre-hospital education in Northwest Indiana by providing high-quality, professional and patient-focused health care education that reflects the needs of our community.

Our Philosophy/Goals Statement

In addition to providing the highest quality pre-hospital education available, St. Mary Medical Center EMS Training Academy places emphasis on personal and professional growth and development, integrity, and professionalism. It is our goal to prepare competent entry level emergency medical providers (EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic) in the cognitive (Knowledge), Psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

In additional to this goal, SMMC will also have the following objectives:

  • Providing students with cognitive, psychomotor, and affective skills necessary to provide the highest quality care to patients in the pre-hospital setting
  • Providing an environment conducive to learning and supporting the student
  • Providing state of the art equipment for students to learn, practice and perfect their skills and knowledge
  • Provide students multiple small group sessions, simulations, skills practice and one-on-one training during didactic instruction
  • Providing the necessary support and/or guidance including counseling, remediation and tutoring
  • Providing access to a wide variety of clinical experiences through affiliation agreements for clinical internships and field rotations
  • Providing passionate faculty that have expertise in pre-hospital care and emergency medical services

St. Mary Medical Center EMS Training Academy offers a traditional, five-month, evening EMT course for the public each fall and spring.

EMT students receive education and training in basic first aid; general anatomy and physiology; medical patient assessment and care; trauma patient assessment and care; pediatrics; geriatrics; hazardous materials; response to terrorism and weapons of mass destruction; Indiana driving laws for emergency response; application of dressings and bandages; application of various splints; administration of oxygen; administration of basic life support medications; cardiopulmonary resuscitation and more.

Successful completion of the EMT course qualifies the EMT candidate to take the Indiana Department of Homeland Security EMT practical and written exams for EMT certification. St. Mary Medical Center hosts the practical exam for students who complete their coursework.

The next Adult EMT course is tentatively set to begin this June and will follow the same schedule, meeting from 5 to 9 pm, Tuesday and Thursday in the Fire/EMS classroom at the Old Ridgeview Elementary School. The cost of the course is $1,200. Current applications are available here.

Prerequisites due for registration include the following:

  • Health Screening by MD, DO, PA or NP
  • Negative 5-panel urine drug screen
  • Negative TB (tuberculin) screen
  • Copy of childhood immunization record (MMR, DpT)
  • Copy of driver's license
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED
  • Non-refundable course deposit of $500
  • Criminal background check
  • Class size is limited to the first 25 applicants.  

St. Mary Medical Center EMS Training Academy offers Paramedic course for the EMT looking to advance their education and training. Our unique course is an accelerated, nine-month course, with classroom sessions beginning in August and ending in May.

Paramedic students receive education and training in anatomy and physiology; pathophysiology; pharmacology; IV and IO access and maintenance; advanced life support medication administration via IV, IO, IM, and other routes; adult and pediatric endotracheal intubation; ECG analysis and interpretation; 12-lead ECG analysis and interpretation; medical patient assessment and care; trauma patient assessment and care; pediatrics; geriatrics; hazardous materials response; response to terrorism and weapons of mass destruction; Indiana driving laws for emergency response and much more.

Successful completion of the Paramedic course qualifies the Paramedic candidate to take the National Registry of EMT's Paramedic practical and written exams for Paramedic certification.

St. Mary Medical Center hosts the practical exam for EMT students who complete their coursework.

Prerequisites due for registration for orientation include the following:

  • Health Screening by MD, DO, PA, or NP
  • Negative 5-panel urine drug screen
  • Negative TB (tuberculin) screen
  • Copy of childhood immunization record (MMR, DpT)
  • Copy of Driver's license
  • Copy of high school diploma or GED
  • Copy of current EMT and CPR certification
  • Letter of intent
  • Two letters of recommendation on SMMC recommendation forms
