EAST CHICAGO-Recognized once again for providing outstanding care, St. Catherine Hospital is one of only 455 hospitals in the nation-out of more than 4,000 Medicare-certified hospitals-that has the highest quality 5-star rating from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). St. Catherine Hospital has received the 5-star rating in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, and again in 2021.
CMS ratings represent quality measures with five stars indicating the highest level of quality care, positive outcomes and excellence in delivering the patient experience. Overall, the star ratings serve as a summary of quality information on topics such as effectiveness of care, efficient use of medical imaging, mortality, patient experience, safety and timeliness of care.
“It’s one thing to say you are committed to quality care, but another to consistently deliver on that promise,” said Leo Correa, Chief Executive Officer, St. Catherine Hospital. “St. Catherine Hospital has done that many times over. Our record of outstanding care is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our physicians, staff and volunteers who incorporate excellence into everything they do, especially in these challenging times of the pandemic.”
The Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating provides information on how well hospitals provide recommended care to their patients, according to CMS’s website Care Compare (formerly Hospital Compare). This information can help consumers make informed decisions about their health and their care providers. The overall rating summarizes up to 57 quality measures reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia, as well as, measures that focus on hospital-acquired infections including catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
These ratings demonstrate how well each hospital performed, on average, as compared to other hospitals in the U.S. hospital ratings range. Less than 15 percent of hospitals nationwide received five stars.
St. Catherine Hospital has been a vital part of East Chicago and its neighboring communities for nearly 100 years. Services that the hospital offers have adapted through the years as the surrounding communities’ needs have changed, but the delivery of quality care remains the same.
