Patients & Visitors

For our patients’ safety and convenience, St. Mary Medical Center offers free valet parking service Monday through Friday, 7 am-5 pm, at the East and West entrances.

How to Use Valet Parking

Drive up to any one of these entrances of the hospital and let the attendant know you would like assistance. You can contact valet parking at 219-945-5195. A valet parking attendant will give you a claim ticket and park your vehicle in a reserved space on the hospital campus.

Visitor Parking

Visitor parking is available in three locations:

  • East side of St. Mary Medical Center along Lake Park Avenue (East Entrance)
  • West side of the hospital campus on Ash Street (West Entrance)
  • Southwest side of the hospital (Surgery Entrance)

For safety and convenience, a security vehicle patrols the parking area.

Any restrictions are imposed only for the benefit of the patients. Visitors may be asked to leave at any time if the patient chooses, staff must provide care at the bedside, or if it is in the best interest of the patient. Please do not visit if you are ill or experiencing symptoms of illness that may make you contagious.

General Visitation
Two (2) visitors at any one time, 8 am-8 pm. This helps us keep noise levels low and create a more restful environment for our patients. Special arrangements are possible for out-of-town visitors; those unable to visit during scheduled times or have extenuating circumstances. Please contact a nurse for assistance.

Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
Two (2) visitors are allowed at the bedside at any one time, 8 am-8 pm. Children under age 12 are not permitted in the ICU. Because ICU patients need more rest than most patients, visiting time is limited. Visitation is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Visitors are asked to check with the Nurses’ Station before entering the patient room.

Acute Rehabilitation
Visiting hours, 8 am-8 pm. Special arrangements may be made for family participation in therapy sessions.

Surgery – Main Floor
Open visitation for immediate family at any time on the day of surgery.

Family Birthing Center | Labor & Delivery
Observation of a delivery is limited by the mother’s wishes and physician discretion. Three (3) visitors may be in the room at any one time. One person is allowed to stay 24 hours. At times, visitors may be asked to leave to provide bedside care or if it is in the best interest of the patient.

Pediatrics
One parent or special visitor is permitted to spend the night in the child’s room.

During normal business hours, visitors may use the East or West entrance. Visitors entering the hospital after 8 pm must enter through the Emergency Department Security area.

Since 1973, St. Mary Medical Center has met the healthcare needs of the Northwest Indiana community, having started through the ministry of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. These caring ways and dedication to the surrounding community remains evident in the investments the hospital has made in new technologies and innovative treatments.

In 2001, St. Mary Medical Center became part of Powers Health, partnering with Community Hospital, Munster and St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago to strive to be the premier hospital system in Indiana. Together, these efforts have led to the achievement of numerous quality awards and accreditations, recognizing St. Mary Medical Center’s consistent excellence in health outcomes and patient experience.

A few of the hospital’s notable achievements include:

  • The $40 million Surgical Pavilion and ICU expansion that added four-stories with state-of-the-art surgical suites, intensive care unit, central sterilization department, post-anesthesia care unit, phase II recovery unit and same-day surgery
  • Use of the TrueBeam® system-image guided radiotherapy system for cancer care and treatment
  • Joint Academy-award winning orthopedic surgery program
  • High Risk Breast Clinic-individualized treatment for women at elevated risk for breast cancer
  • Community outreach programs through local YMCA partnerships and the Brickie Clinic
  • Anticoagulation Clinic-management for patients taking medications to prevent or treat blood clots

St. Mary Medical Center is accredited by The Joint Commission and has received gold seals of approval as a Primary Stroke Center, for Hip and Knee Replacement and as Centers of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecology and Robotic Surgery.
