Treating Abnormal Heart Rhythms

Find an Electrophysiologist

Our Approach

Our Electrophysiology Lab and Clinic offer a multidisciplinary team approach to complex arrhythmia disorders.

Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) is the study of the heart’s electrical system to diagnose and treat abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). The EP Lab is staffed with full-time registered nurses, radiology technicians, electrophysiologists, and cardiologists as well as anesthesia services for ultimate patient care.

EP studies diagnose heart rhythm abnormalities which may need medication, further testing or procedures such as ablation or implantation of a pacemaker or defibrillator. Ablation procedures are performed with catheters to correct abnormal heart rhythms. Pacemaker procedures involve the implantation of a device to treat slow heart rhythms (bradycardia). Life-threatening rapid heart rhythms are treated with implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD).

Patients receiving treatment for all arrythmia conditions may receive ongoing follow-up and consultation with our electrophysiologists on staff at our Electrophysiology Clinics in Munster, East Chicago and Hobart. The clinics also offer device management services for pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders – including remote monitoring.

Treatments

CARDIAC DEFIBRILLATOR IMPLANTATION

Battery-powered device to detect and stop irregular heart beat.

CARDIAC LOOP RECORDER IMPLANTATION AND EXPLANT

Implanted device that records heartbeat continuously for up to three years.

CARDIAC RESYNCHRONIZATION THERAPY

Insertion of electrodes to help your heart beat in rhythm.

CARDIOVERSION

Quick, low-energy shocks to restore regular heart rhythm.

CATHETER ABLATION

Also called cardiac ablation or radiofrequency ablation, this procedure guides a tube into the heart to eliminate tissue that may be causing abnormal heartbeat.

CONDUCTION SYSTEM PACING

Implantation of permanent pacing leads along the cardiac conduction system.

DEVICE LEAD EXTRACTION

Removal of heart device leads within the body.

DIAGNOSTIC ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY STUDIES

Test used to evaluate the heart’s electrical system and check for abnormal heart rhythms.

ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY CLINIC

Follow-up care for arrhythmia conditions, counseling and device management.

EVENT RECORDERS

Portable device worn to record the heart’s electrical activity (ECG) that is worn 14 to 30 days.

TILT TESTING

Simple test to show different positions that affect heart rate, rhythm and blood pressure.
