Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)

A Minimally Invasive Option for Aortic Valve Replacement
tavr

The first to offer TAVR in Northwest Indiana, Powers Health’s Structural Heart and Valve team continues to be a leader in this groundbreaking heart valve replacement procedure. Our team of fellowship-trained interventional cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons has performed more than 1,000 TAVRs to date making it one of the most experienced teams in the Chicagoland area. We are also the only Northwest Indiana healthcare system with our own locally-based TAVR team on site with expertise in the catheter-based surgical techniques needed to perform these complex procedures.

An alternative to open heart surgery

TAVR is a minimally-invasive surgery used to treat aortic stenosis, a disease that causes the aortic valve to narrow and restrict blood flow in the heart. The damaged aortic valve is replaced through the use of a catheter inserted into an artery in the leg and delivered and implanted in the heart. This minimally-invasive approach saves the patient from having to endure the rigors of conventional open heart surgery.

During a TAVR procedure, the Structural Heart & Valve team performs an aortic valve replacement without removing the original damaged valve. The procedure is performed in our highly advanced hybrid OR, which is specially equipped with high-definition video integration technology that aids the team in real-time image guidance and continual medical assessment.

Outcomes you can take heart in

The TAVR patient experience at Powers Health is exceptional. The average hospital stay for patients is two days or less and if an ICU stay is warranted, patients spend roughly half the time there than those at other centers. As with any procedure, there is a risk of complication but our rates are significantly lower than national benchmarks.
