Concussion Care
Concussions occur when trauma to the head or spine results in a temporary disturbance of brain function. If a concussion is suspected, seeking immediate medical care significantly will increase the likelihood of a full recovery and decrease the chance of developing long-term problems.
Our medical team at Powers Health consists of specially trained physicians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, neuropsychologists and athletic trainers who are experienced in evaluating and treating concussions and provide individualized treatment options to patients.
The effects of concussion vary from person to person.
- Although common in sports, concussions also commonly occur in motor vehicle, workplace and home accidents.
- Having a concussion increases the risk of another concussion, particularly in the first year.
- Fewer than 10 percent of concussions result in loss of consciousness.
- Relative rest is important - both physical and cognitive - to allow the brain to heal. Physical rest includes not fully participating in athletics or fitness activities until symptoms resolve. Cognitive rest includes significantly decreasing time spent in activities that stimulate the brain, such as reading, watching television, playing video games or listening to music.
Our hospitals use ImPACT testing and SWAY Balance as part of the concussion evaluation process. Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing is a 30-minute computerized evaluation that allows our specialists to have a better understanding of your cognitive state so they are able to recommend the best individualized treatment plan for you.
When treated properly, most people fully recover from a single concussion. Repeated concussions may lead to longer recoveries and cause post-concussion symptoms or disabilities, especially in children.
Our goal is to help you return to daily activities including work, sports and school. A team of specially trained and certified physicians and athletic trainers work collaboratively with your primary care physician so that your treatment continues until you are fully recovered.
Free baseline ImPACT testing is offered for student athletes. To schedule an appointment, call 219-836-4461.
