Inspire Therapy
Community Hospital Sleep Medicine Services offers Inspire, a breakthrough technology to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients. Inspire works with a patient’s natural breathing process to treat OSA. The therapy is geared toward patients who cannot use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.
OSA affects 22 million Americans. Left untreated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack and even death, due to a lack of oxygen to the brain. A popular treatment is CPAP therapy, which uses a hose and mask to deliver steady air pressure during sleep. Some patients are unable to use CPAP for a number of reasons, so Inspire may be the solution for them.
The Inspire system is made up of a stimulation lead and breathing sensor that is placed under the skin of the neck and chest through three small incisions. Before bed, the patient activates Inspire with a small, handheld remote. The system monitors each breath taken during sleep and delivers mild, rhythmic stimulation that restores tone to the upper airway, allowing normal breath to occur.
