Miles Dunscombe takes care of his heart through cardiac rehab at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System. In September of 2019, he joined the teams from across the healthcare system, including the cardiopulmonary care department of St. Mary Medical Center to participate in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk in Porter County.
“I found cardiac rehab a good way to exercise and meet people who had been through a similar experience,” Dunscombe says. “The neat thing about the walk is that is comes around in the fall and you can see if you have been making any progress over the year by participating. The important thing is that I am still able to get around and walk and exercise. It’s a good time to go out there and be with quality people.”
Cardiac rehab is a complete lifestyle change and an ongoing commitment,” says Lori Turco, RN, supervisor, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, St. Mary Medical Center. “You can’t just do it for 12 weeks and then say, ‘I’m done.’ It is the camaraderie that keeps them motivated. They are their own cheerleaders for each other as well as the staff who keep them coming back.”
