RN Clinical Educator/Clinical Simulation Coordinator

What is your role with Community Healthcare System?
I am a Registered Nurse Clinical Educator at Community Hospital and the Clinical Simulation Coordinator for Community Healthcare System.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
I have always had a strong interest in the natural sciences and technology. Healthcare offers a wide variety of opportunities to combine these interests. It also allows me to meet and learn from people from a variety of backgrounds.

What is a typical day like for you?
My days usually consist of planning and executing classes. I am responsible for developing and teaching classes primarily geared for nursing staff. The simulation labs within Community Healthcare System have expanded tremendously in the last two years. This has required countless hours dedicated to designing, testing and delivering effective simulation experiences that provide staff with realistic patient care scenarios that build skills while fostering critical thinking.

How long have you been employed here?
I have been employed at Community Hospital for 15 years.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
I began working at Community Hospital right as the facility was making significant technological advancements in the delivery and management of patient care. I was here for the conversion from paper charting to electronic medical record documentation. I have witnessed numerous upgrades, including medication dispensing cabinets, pneumatic tube delivery systems and integrative equipment that can remotely “talk to” a patient’s chart while we deliver care at the bedside. Simulation lab is the next step in enhancing patient safety.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite “local gem”?
I really enjoy being out in nature, especially if I can do so on my bicycle. Gardening has been a lifelong passion that I learned from my mom. My favorite “local gem” is, without a doubt, the bird viewing room at Gibson Woods in Hammond.

What do you enjoy most about working at Community Healthcare System?
I loved every second of patient care as a bedside nurse. I use my role now as an extension of that love. I take a great deal of pride knowing that I am helping new nurses practice confidently and competently. Working with my team in the Educational Services Department is equally fun and rewarding!
