PACU Nurse's Aide
What is your role with Community Healthcare System?
I am a Nurse's Aide in the PACU (Post-anesthesia Care Unit) at Community Hospital.
What was your inspiration for getting into health care?
Growing up, I was inspired by my mother, grandmother and aunts, who all dedicated themselves to their various roles in the health care system. I became a Nurse's Aide to develop my patient care skills and to understand what it means to be a part of a health care team. This role allows me to create meaningful connections with people in my community. I am fortunate to have learned how to work effectively as a team member by providing patient care. I hope to carry forward these skills to help me connect with and serve patients as I begin medical school this fall.
What is a typical day like for you?
My position is PRN (as necessary), but I typically work three eight-hour shifts per week. I help get patients settled and comfortable following surgery by setting up the vitals machine, placing Bair Huggers and emptying drains/Foleys. I also assist the PACU nurses with transferring patients back to the floor.
How long have you been employed here?
I started working for Community Hospital two years ago, but I volunteered at the front desk for a few years prior to that.
What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
This role has allowed me to gain confidence in myself and confirmed my passion for serving others.
What are some of your interests outside of work?
My hobbies include cooking vegetarian meals, baking cakes and making pottery.
What do you enjoy most about working at Community Healthcare System?
I love working with the staff in the perioperative care setting. The PACU and SAU (surgical assessment unit) nurses have been great role models for quality patient care and will serve as inspiration for me as I continue on with my career in health care. It is an honor to have worked alongside them during my time as a Nurse's Aide.
